Bacterial Pathogens and Symbionts Harboured by Ixodes ricinus Ticks Parasitising Red Squirrels in the United Kingdom

چکیده

Red squirrels (Sciurus vulgaris) are native to most of Eurasia; in much the United Kingdom, they have been supplanted by non-native grey squirrel, and considered an endangered species. Very little is known about range tick-borne pathogens which UK red exposed. As part trap-and-release surveys examining prevalence Mycobacterium spp. squirrel populations on two islands, Ixodes ricinus ticks were removed from PCR screened for Borrelia spp., intracellular arthropod-borne bacteria parasitic wasp Ixodiphagus hookeri. At both sites, commonly encountered tick-transmitted bacterium was burgdorferi sensu lato (overall minimum 12.7%), followed Anaplasma phagocytophilum 1.6%). Single infected with Spiroplasma found at single miyamotoi or Ehrlichia sp. one site. Ticks harbouring Wolbachia 15.2%) all positive I. Our study shows that potentially exposed a variety bacterial via feeding ticks. The effects health survival this already vulnerable wildlife species unknown, further studies needed evaluate threat posed other pathogens.

Coexistence of emerging bacterial pathogens in Ixodes ricinus ticks in Serbia.

The list of tick-borne pathogens is long, varied and includes viruses, bacteria, protozoa and nematodes. As all of these agents can exist in ticks, their co-infections have been previously reported. We studied co-infections of emerging bacterial pathogens (Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Francisella tularensis) in Ixodes ricinus ticks in Serbia. Using PCR techniqu...

Infections and coinfections of questing Ixodes ricinus ticks by emerging zoonotic pathogens in Western Switzerland.

In Europe, Ixodes ricinus is the vector of many pathogens of medical and veterinary relevance, among them Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato and tick-borne encephalitis virus, which have been the subject of numerous investigations. Less is known about the occurrence of emerging tick-borne pathogens like Rickettsia spp., Babesia spp., "Candidatus Neoehrlichia mikurensis," and Anaplasma phagocytophi...

Ecological factors characterizing the prevalence of bacterial tick-borne pathogens in Ixodes ricinus ticks in pastures and woodlands.

Ecological changes are recognized as an important driver behind the emergence of infectious diseases. The prevalence of infection in ticks depends upon ecological factors that are rarely taken into account simultaneously. Our objective was to investigate the influences of forest fragmentation, vegetation, adult tick hosts, and habitat on the infection prevalence of three tick-borne bacteria, Bo...

Natural Transmission of Zoonotic Babesia spp. by Ixodes ricinus Ticks

To determine characteristics of natural transmission of Babesia sp. EU1 and B. divergens by adult Ixodes ricinus ticks, we examined tick salivary gland contents. We found that I. ricinus is a competent vector for EU1 and that their sporozoites directly invade erythrocytes. We conclude that EU1 is naturally transmitted by I. ricinus.
